I sprung for the MacConnection MacBook 2.16 deal
#1
Sold a PowerBook 1.67 I rescued a few months back and decided, at the price and given it comes with Leopard and iLife (of which I already have family packs so I guess it's not a big deal anyway) that I'd go for a new 2nd Gen (I guess) MacBook.
I wonder a little bit though - was it a good idea to have bought the generation down model? Looking at the specs it appears there's no difference. I would have bought a new or refurb 2.0 if I hadn't seen this one on the competition's site yesterday before it showed up here.
Do I get a leader? Do I deserve it?
Also ordered 4GB of RAM from our sponsor - hoping it will recognize all of it even though the Apple specs say 2GB max.
Ignore that - above question answered while I was composing this post.

From the front page of this forum - also on DM yesterday.

Does the 2.16 have the Santa Rosa chip?

You have a Rev. B

The Rev. C is Santa Rosa:

Thanks for that link. Interesting, when I compared specs on the Apple pages for the refurb 2.0 and the refurb 2.16, they were nearly identical 'cept for processor speed - which indicates the refurb MacBook 2.0 is non- Rev C. (I couldn't find the specs laid out for the new 2.0 like they are presented for the refurbs). I guess, if I was only planning on spending 1099 for a MacBook, I did OK buying the 2.16. But, is the new 2.0 a Rev C?

new 2.0 is the rev C

santa rosa chip and the 4 gig ram limit -- but no superdrive

new 2.0 is $1044 after rebate, no tax, free shipping from either amazon or maconnection

Getting the superdrive, larger HDD seemed to me a good choice but I didn't know about the Rev difference. Was I wrong? Should I have popped for the (perhaps) slightly slower Rev C? (I think I can still change the order- hasn't shipped yet).

Tough call. I tend to get as much Mac as I can in the form of stuff I can't upgrade later: bus speed and graphics in this case. The smaller HD can always be replaced later. You could get a SuperDrive for the low-end Rev.C later but I'd be more inclined to just use an external burner for less cost. It really depends on your priorities, they're both nice Macs.

This is interesting. I called MacConnection and canceled the order, then asked for technical advice. The same person handling the order gave me the following (incorrect) advice that the 2.0 was the Rev B and the 2.2 was the Rev C. So I un-canceled the order. Now, after searching with Google, I found the Apple spec sheet for the current models and the 2.0 and 2.2 are both Rev C and identical except for the processor speed and lack of DVD write/smaller HDD.
So, it is a tough call. While I don't really need the DVD writer, the larger HDD will be nice. On the other hand, this is replacing a G3 900 iBook and a 1.67 PB, so either one will be heads and shoulders faster. The G3 wireless slowed down my network while the PB was too large though otherwise adequate.
