I really just don't "get" the Apple haters (The Sony Reader s/w blows related rant)
#1
I finally broke down and bought a Sony Reader yesterday. As far as the Reader itself goes, I love it for what it is, flaws and all. It does what I need it to do. But the s/w required to buy books from the Sony eBook store is hardly iTunes or iTMS, even though you can tell Sony tried to copy it best they could. For example, best I can tell there is no way to select specific books to sync to the Reader, while leaving others on the computer. It seems to be an all or nothing proposition unless you put each book in a separate folder (more work).

I REALLY appreciate Apple after using this Sony/PC crapware and it got me thinking about why Apple Haters hate Apple. This Sony Reader s/w isn't a one-off bad egg. Most PC required gadgets ship with similar ill-conceived user unfriendly s/w. Apple is about the only company that realizes the s/w is as important as the h/w, and yet there are people out there that want see Apple blow up b/c other consumers appreciate Apple's ease of use platforms. Sure Apple owns the digital music (and video?) market, maybe even a big chunk of the Smartphone market soon, but only b/c they make a product that people actually understand and want...its not just slick marketing.

Then there are the media companies that fear Apple is getting to "powerful." I'm all for robust competition, but I don't see any. I just see a bunch of whining companies that make half-assed attempts to make something better than Apple, then fail and just whine louder, usually to their Congressman.

From my perspective it looks like no tech product can take off with out an offering from Apple b/c only Apple really understands the consumer. Why don't the Haters get that and start competing for real instead of just conspiring against Apple? What am I missing here?

"Our side is better than your side"

This is built in to human nature and exists everywhere that people exist and with every topic of conversation. Apple-lovers and Apple-haters are no different.

Or: Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.

That stinks.

1) I like the Sony form factor. When I read from it I don't feel like I'm reading from an electronic table. The Kindle has the keyboard on the front which really doesn't grab me for a reading device. Plus I don't really care for all the plastic on the Kindle. As one reviewer said, it looks like 1986.

2) My local library has lots of PDF books (they self-destruct after two weeks). The Sony Reader does PDFs natively, the Kindle doesn't.

but also because

3) the Kindle isn't in stock and I wanted a reader for my holiday flying. I may have given it more consideration, but not in stock, ugly, and $100 more...3 strikes your out for now. Maybe next time.

The Kindle has lots of promise but they need to lower the price of the content and reader and make it a little sleeker and conceal the k/b better. And if they could make a newspaper format like a newspaper on screen, two thumbs up, way up.

"conceal the k/b better."

What's the "k/b"?

I had to figure out what "b/c" was (because) but that one is more common. Lord knows, the labor involved in typing the word "because" should be avoided.

What the heck is "k/b"?

Because doing what Apple does is difficult. Potential competitors don't have the expertise, resources, or will to do what Apple does. That's their fault and their problem. AFAIC, they can either step up or step away and STFU.

Good observations, btw.

Translations:

h/w = hardware

s/w = software

b/c = because

k/b = keyboard

The only reason to buy the Kindle is because it has access to the proprietary Amazon.com eBook library. The Sony reader is a better piece of hardware IMHO.
