Migration assistant, from an external drive?

Can I run the Migration assistant and copy from an external drive? I killed another MacBook but the drive is fine in an external enclosure. Will this work?

Great, at least some good news. 1st she tells me the iBook G3/900 has died the common death. So I gave her my old G4 14" 167. Daughter not only broke the latch but managed to drop it on the power connector several times. The other darling daughter managed to keep the old iBook going until I replaced it with a Macbook and that is going strong.
How can siblings be so different? Don't even get me started about remotes and cordless phones... Love hurts.
