The mini-series, not the hard drive. Notables I never knew were in it (was just a kid when it came out but I do remember it as a huge TV event) include:
-- A pre-batshiat insane OJ Simpson in what must have been one of his first non-commercial gigs; he got second billing right after Ed Asner
-- Maya Angelou
-- Lou Gosset Jr.
-- Cicely Tyson
-- Lorne Greene
-- and of course Lt. Jordi LaForge (well, I did know LeVar was in it)
Music by the Q...Quincy Jones.
Some light nudity as well. Pretty unheard of for this time on US TV IIRC. Also interesting is that the time period at opening is 1750 in The Gambia, West Africa. The people are Muslim....kunta kinte's dad gives thanks to Allah. I didn't realize Muslims had been to this area of Africa at this time. My cultural ignorance at work.
