Refurbished Mac Pro 2.66GHz Dual-Core(previous model) or 2.8GHz Quad-Core(current)

The refurb prices are damn good so this might be the best time to sell the g5 dual 1.8 and upgrade. I could max out the ram in the g5 but it's 4 years old and just doesn't make much sense to me, new machine = quicker work flow or at least the machine is waiting on me not the other way around. So is the extra four cores, faster memory worth a extra $400, anyone seen a better deal on the mac pro's than the apple store online(refurbished). This machine would be for finalcut/dvd studio and adobe cs. I am close to pushing the button today.

Sorry for so many edits - I realized after I originally posted that I ended repeating a lot of what you already had stated about the advantages of the 2.8Ghz model. For video processing it should clearly be much better.

I was wrestling with the same problem earlier this year.

Some important points.

First, the new unit is one $2199 at http://www.macconnection.com/IPA/Shop/Pr...ku=8252544
Second, by buying new, your credit card doubles the warranty so AppleCare is only a 1 year extension - and not worth buying.
The 2.8 new processor benchmarks closer to the old 3.0 than the old 2.66.

All I have to say about AppleCare is ASK GtDS about how AppleCare
can come in handy, when the machine blows, and there is nothing to
replace it with except the low end...
Dual 16 core, 5GHz Xeon Mac Pro, with quad processor 4GB video card....

dont forget tax from the apple store

The refurb 2.8 is an 8-core machine. The new 2.8 from MacConnection is a 4-core machine (as is the refurb 2.66).

I just sold my dual G5 for $950...and lunch. But I had to deliver it, so i guess the lunch is a wash.

that's actually the single processor model something i would never buy.
