Time to call Apple on new iMac slowness?
#1
I bought my wife a new Al 2.0 imac (3g ram, latest leopard) two months back and it has seemed sluggish from day one.

Compared to my macbook 2.0 it is dog slow, even on the iWork and iLife apps it is a little slower, though not as much.

But the biggest complaint is the performace with CS 2. Indesign CS2 bounces 40 plus times in the dock before launching, Illustrator takes about a minute to get to the splash screen as does photoshop.

Other issues include out of memory errors when exporting documents to pdf.

I have been afraid to uninstall and reinstall the CS2 suite since my wife, a graphic designer, is near the end of a project on deadline using these apps.

My wife, who depends on me for the tech stuff, is pissed and hates this machine.

I have run diskwarrior but nothing seems to help.

Should I call Apple before my 90 days phone support is up just to make sure it is not the machine?

Other ideas?

You might want to try reseating the memory. I assume that you replaced one of the 1gb chips with a 2gb chip. It's tricky to seat them right. YOu really have to push on them. If it's not seated right and you are only using 1gb of RAM of course the CS2 apps are going to be sluggish.

If this is not the solution, then bring it into the nearest Apple store and have a genius take a look at it. If you are not near an Apple store, then of course call Applecare without delay.

Would it show up as 3 in the profile if not seated correctly?

thanks

Does Apple System Profiler indicate the correct amount of memory?

Yes, it shows up as 3 gb of ram

How risky would it be to reinstall CS2 without damaging current work?

I suppose I could put it on an external drive and see what happens, huh? Don't know whay that did not occur to me before.

There is something very wrong with the iMac. Nothing should take 40 plus bounces to launch. If you don't feel like taking this on yourself then by all means call Apple. They will probably just have you reinstall the OS, and if you have AppleCare you could run Tech Tool.

My guess is a wonky hard drive, make sure to back up your wife's data now.

Have you tried creating a new user account as a test and seeing how responsive it acts when logged into that test account?

Also, have you run Activity Monitor (in the Utilities Folder), set it to sort by % CPU and show All Processes, and see what's using the most. Maybe you have some app or driver that's sucking up all of the CPU time.

This is one reason I use MenuMeters --- it shows me on the top of my screen, what my processors are doing, and if they are running more than 6-8% for browser and mail, something isn't right or there is a screen open with Flash that is reloading constantly (and I can also see the Network traffic/speed as well as RAM used).

It's free, I've been using it for 5 years (roughly) and it has NEVER caused a problem, G3, G4 or Intel.

Are you aware that CS2 is not Intel native and that the apps are running under Rosetta which does impose a performance hit over native? That's certainly not helping matters.
