I need a SATA hard drive for backing up (external case). Any reason I shouldn't get this one:

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3500630AS 500GB Serial ATA 7200RPM Hard Drive w/16MB Buffer, 5 year warranty ............ $70 + $7 shipping

Hmm, pretty good price on that.

Are you sure your case can handle a 500GB (big) drive? Some older ones do not have the ability to address more than 120GB.

Only reason not to get this one might be that you can get a bigger one for only a little more money, but 500GB is not a bad place to be.

Is there anyway to figure out how large of a drive can be used in a case? I have a Seagate 9W2074-500 (160gb) external. Just wondering if I can stick something else in there. It is probably PATA though.

It is probably PATA though. If it's recognizing more than 128 GB then there's probably no limitation (although I've been seeing "1 TB" given as a limit in some cases; moot since I've neer seen a PATA above 750 GB).

Probably some utility out there to do that.

I think if you already have a 160GB in there then it should be no problem going up to 500GB or more. 120GB was the limit on many of the G4 macs' stock IDE/PATA controller hardware.

there is no limit on SATA cases

and like others have said, if its already over 128, it will go bigger no sweat

500gb is the sweet spot right now and that's tied for the lowest I've seen. 750's are still a bit more $/gb.

Thanks a bunch for the heads up, best price I've seen. FWIW, I recently bought one of these; returned it to Seagate as it was DOA and they replaced it w/a 1TB drive even up!!

i've been using Seagate drives almost exclusively since 1989 because they have 5 year warranties (who cares if your data goes South along w/drive?) but more importantly their return/replacement service is first rate IME.

As always, YMMV

Just ordered one. Thanks for the heads up too.

Any suggestions for a good quality fanless FW 400 /800 external case?
