PowerMac Dual 500 (GigE), iSight for $150... deal?
#1
I'm acquiring a PM dual 500, Gigabit Ethernet model, with 256MB of RAM and an iSight for $150, does that seem like a good price? I'd like to keep the iSight, but since money's tight I'll probably sell it, hoping to end up spending no more than $50 for the whole package. I have a B&W G3 that I'll probably move RAM from and then part out for a few extra bucks. I was going to set up the G3 as a server but it's a Rev. 1 and I was never able to justify a new SATA card and drives, so I'll just use the dual 500 as my server.

The HD is dead in the PM, so I'll have to drop one of mine in, but my thought process is to drop all the small IDE drives (anything under 250 GB ) into the PM and replace them in the FW cases (one single and one dual-RAID) with 500 drives (the 750GB HD's are too much given IDE is now a legacy device) and use those for backups. This will also give me a decent performing G4 so when I sell the PowerBook later this year and upgrade to a MacBook Pro I'll still have a PPC machine to run any funky software that's PPC and/or 10.4.X only.

it's basically like getting the computer for free <$50, so I say good deal.

deal. That's a very stable machine. Runs 10.4 like a champ.

You'll still need an SATA or ATA card for any drives over 137GB.

iSight alone is worth that. The computer is "free"

good find

See if you can get the box, literature, stands, etc. from the iSight. They are collector's items now, especially with all the packaging.
