FW target mode only sees on internal HD
#1
Trying to transfer files via Migration assistant.
MDD=> iMac c2d 2.16.
MDD starts in target mode, but only one of my 4 internals (the wrong one) mounts, and migration Assistant doesn't see that there's any drive mounted via TDM ("continue" is greyed out and the prompt is telling me to restart the old mac in TDM even though the one drive is mounted).
Tried multiple restarts. Any ideas?

Pretty sure it will only see one drive. The drive you want to see should be set as the master.

Mavic has the answer.

TDM will only see the internal master drive. It will not see externals or slave drives. Migration Assistant will see external FW drives, but not while the computer you are exporting data from is in TDM.

It's already been said, but I concur with the above answers from my own past experience.

Pretty retarded (sorry) then of Apple to treat TDM like the only choice for migration assistant.
Guess I moved everything for nothing. It appears my only choice short of taking the MDD apart is to create a fresh backup via my external USB 2 drive, and then hooking it up to the iMac and using MA via USB. Which is what I was going to do originally.

I tried connecting the two macs via ethernet cable, but the MA on the new mac says to launch MA on the old mac and select "to another mac"-- but that option's not there!
Total headbanger. Glad all this went smoothly for the rest of you.

I have used MA from an external USB HDD.
No TDM.
As long as there is a valid system.
****EDIT****
Network your Macs.
Mount the old drive on the new Mac. (Turn on Server on old Mac)
Launch MA in Apps/Utilities folder.
How would you like to Migrate?
Choose.: From another Volume on this Mac.

Yes, I know, the option is there in the choices, but Migration Assistant pretty authoritatively commands you to use firewire target disc mode.

My experience matched BL's. The dialog you get clearly states TDM, or strongly implies it to the extent that someone who's not used Migration Assistant previously wouldn't be drawn to wonder about alternatives.

Thx . . . and then when it does give choices for alternatives, the ones you need mysteriously aren't there (not talking about slave drives, I got that part . . .)
