Anybody had success opening up 320GB WD Scorpio
#1
I'm looking to use one in a new MacBook; I'd love to hear some success stories first....

Do you mean opening up a Passport to get to the Scorpio?

I bought a bare WD 320 and put it in my new macbook-- smooth as buttah so far.

Thanks, BL--good info. I'm guessing it would speed things up, too--how has it been for you?

And, yeah, dbow, that's exactly what I mean--let me see if I can edit the title..

I opened one, very easy, no tools required.

as dbow says, the black USB external drives are called Passport and have a SATA Scorpio drive inside. I've done two. Easy. Use something to pry with, like a credit card or screwdriver. Its kind of tricky to do it and leave the case looking completely new, which is what I tried since I sold it on CL after replacing the 320 with an 80. Got the 320 for $125 from buy.com and sold the 80 for $60. Pretty cheap upgrade.

Thermarest-

Is it the same deal for the colored Passports? I've seen 'em for $128....

Not sure about the colors. Prices jump up and down, but generally on a downward trend of course. That $125 for 320GB was way way back two or four weeks ago when they were still $170 at BestBuy, CC and the like. Not sure what prices are now.
