I have tried without success to get the Waste Management guys to take away an old plastic garbage can with a bottom that was almost worn off and missing a handle. I've put notes on it stating that it was trash and would you please take it away, even putting a big sign on it saying "Basura" (trash in Spanish). I finally took drastic measures last week and cut it in half vertically with a circular saw. They finally took it.
Have any of you ever been successful in getting rid of a trash can without taking drastic measures? If so how did you do it?

If cutting it up is a drastic measure, that's what I had to do to get them to rwecycle a broken recycling bin. They dropped off a new one when I emailed the SWA that mine was cracked in half. Then, when I put the broken one INSIDE the new one, they left both of them at the curb. This went on for 4 weeks until I sawed it into 4 pieces. Then they took the pieces.

I have wondered the same thing...
If it were me, I would try and catch them while they were there at the curb. Then, try and explain to them that the can needs to go.

Jeff - Somewhat unpredictable when they will arrive, but the biggest problem is that the house is 600 feet down a steep winding driveway surrounded by heavy vegetation. The circular saw is apparently the best solution.

They probably thought your name was "Basura" and that you marked it so your neighbors wouldn't steal it.
Ona similar note, a friend had a boat named "Poubell" which I understand is a French slang term for trash can. I never quite understod what was behind that name until I sailed it back to the states for him and found things falling off right and left in a thunderstorm in the the middle of Gulf Stream. It all became very clear.

We just put a note on ours. But, we also give our garbage guys cookies, sodas, etc. so they know us. They take almost anything we put out there, but we don't overdo it. Also, most people now rent a container from them that enables them to use a machine to pick it up. If it wears out, they replace it. kj.

Our neighbor from our old 'hood did just that: gave the trash pick-up crews burritos. And they would pick up anything!

I cut it up in the past. Now the company supplies the containers so you can have trash, green waste and recyclable. Big stuff I take to work and throw in dumpster.

Everything here has to be in a bag
an orange bag with the town logo on it
before the orange bags it would have to have been cut up and put inside of a regular plastic trash bag or physically bring it to the transfer station for recycling.
How about a craigslist CURB ALERT ?
someone might want it for something else.
