Kid's MP3 Player
#1
My daughter is really in to music and loves dancing to the radio in her room. The problem is there are basically no stations that play age appropriate music. I decided to move her iMac from the Living Room to her Bedroom so I can load it with kid-safe tunes.

I need a suggestion on a free, easy to use MP3 player for my 4 year old daughter. Preferably something lightweight that won't kill her little Graphite iMac G3.

Thanks!

are you looking for software for the iMac (in which case, what's wrong with iTunes? my kids had no problems with it at that age) or a hardware, external device?

Check eBay for: RIO CALI. It's compatible with mp3 and itunes. I use one at the gym and it works great.

Sorry, I meant MP3 Player as in software. Like iTunes, only simpler without the ability to delete tracks. I'm using iTunes now but my daughter really likes to dig in and delete things. I have her set up with a simplified Finder with a very limited number of Apps, she always manages to get past the restrictions and open (and delete) whatever she wants. Smile

Easy way to handle that is to make a file of the songs you OK for her in an iTunes folder on your Mac. Then let iTunes on her Mac share those files. Since the files are on your Mac she can't delete them.

Her iMac isn't connected to the network. There's no Ethernet run in that room and there's no wifi on the iMac.

That's actually a really good idea though. I like the idea of being able to add acceptable songs quickly and easily. I may look into finding a cheap USB wifi connection thingie.

Very good suggestion.

Another way is to create a custom iTunes library for her on her Mac. Then make a backup copy of the iTunes music folder with the copy located in an area where she doesn't have write permissions (erase permission). This could be in the home folder of another user account on the same machine.

If she ever deletes music that you want to restore, simply copy the track(s) back into iTunes from the backup copy.

Edit: Not having her machine on the network simplifies your life a lot I expect. You never have to worry about her unsupervised Internet usage on that machine or her hacking into the other machines on your network.

Belkin makes a USB wifi "connection thingee" that works well. I had it on my son's G3 before upgrading him to a mini.
