Good Automator reference?
#1
I've been working with Automator in Leopard. It's still more clunky than I think it needs to be, but some of the things I want to do are halfway working.

For example, I want to create a workflow so that whenever a file hits the desktop, it's sorted and filed elsewhere. I've wanted this since before Panther but there's still no easy way to do it. I have it partially working, but the biggest problem right now is it's not automated. I have to go and click run on the the workflow to make it work.

Any idea how that can be automated? Know of a good Automator reference?

Thanks

What feature of Automator is particularly attractive?

Seems to me that AppleScript and folder actions would be a better tool.

I don't know AppleScript. So the fact that I can use a GUI is the key. Without knowing AppleScript, Folder Actions are incredibly limited.

Give Hazel a shot: http://www.noodlesoft.com/hazel.php

It works great at doing what you described. You may save valuable time using it over Automator.

Wow, I've been wanting that from the Finder since 10.2. I'll check it out some more, thanks.

No problem. I found that app a while ago but thought it was a little over priced. I wound up getting it as part of the recent MacUpdate Bundle and I have to say, it's worth every penny of the asking price. Every couple days I find another good use for it. A real time saver.

Screencasts are on the Hazel site too... but there is a 10% discount I see.
