I am thinking of building a simple XL twin, 39x80" platform, and need an inexpensive mattress. Costco sells the regular twin for about $130, and I don't really want to go much higher than that. Other local B+M stores want over $300 if they even carry it.
Do we have any tall people here?

Yes, but I think we all opt for a queen or king size. It's a matter of supply and demand, I think. As you're discovering, if you can find one it won't be inexpensive.

May have better luck through a supplier to schools and other institutions such as colleges and universities. They tend to buy the long-Twin size mattresses in bulk for dorm rooms, and need to have some extra bed length for tall persons.

I found extra long twin on either the Penney's site or Target's. The set - mattress and box spring - was $600, so I didn't bother telling you!
Do you have a place called Sleep Country around where you live? I bet they could get one for you, assuming they don't have them in stock. There's nothing about that size on their website, but I think they push their higher quality sleep sets there. I know very inexpensive ones can be bought in the stores. Of course they don't last long, but that's a different issue.

Sleep Country has one for $300. I will check the college angle.
