Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus 500GB USB 2.0 & Firewire 400 External $99
#1
Looks like a good deal on a dual interface 500GB external drive. $99 plus shipping, handling, and sales tax where applicable. Looks like price is good for today and tomorrow only.

MJG,

Definitely a good price, though not necessarily the best deal if you have to pay tax and shipping. But, if no tax, definitely a good deal. If not shipping, then a very good deal. Don't know if it's a good prepackaged drive, though.

7200RPM, 16MB cache - I've had a few of these Maxtor One Touch drives and haven't had any problems yet (knock on wood). I just use them as a big password protected drives and don't mess with the "one touch" feature.

FYI - Ground shipping is about $7 and Fry's collects tax for shipments to AZ, CA, GA, OH, TX, NV,WA, IL and IN.

I have one of the One Touch 4 Plus drives I picked up on a deal at Staples about 6 months ago.

Nice enough drive - It's a Prolific chipset IIRC (lots of info on the Seagate page if you dig)

I don't use the One Touch software either - just drag & drop for redundant back ups

So far - no complaints (except it's kind of odd shaped so it's no stackable)

Good price on it.

This is going to sound dumb but how do you password protect a HD??

I use the "DrivePass" feature:

"Because of privacy concerns, the Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus and the Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini storage solutions include two levels of security to guard against unauthorized use of a lost or stolen drive. Maxtor Encryption creates a password-protected folder that is safe and reliable as well as easy to use. To encrypt: simply drag and drop sensitive data into the 256bit AES encrypted folder and the data is automatically encrypted. To decrypt: simply open the folder, enter your password and drag the files out. For added protection, Maxtor DrivePassā„¢ (formerly Maxtor DriveLockā„¢) is an embedded firmware feature that further restricts data access even if the internal hard drive is removed and attached to another computer."
