Making Renewable, Carbon-Neutral Oil — From Algae

"A San Diego start-up says it is using algae to make oil that can be refined into gasoline and other fuels that are both renewable and carbon-neutral, and it plans to produce 10,000 barrels a day within five years."

Sounds promising, but may result in only being a drop in the bucket for what the US consumes on a daily basis.

You could say that about every single fuel type that has ever been or will ever be used. You have to start somewhere. Petroleum use started at zero too (and that wasn't very long ago).

It will be a good start if they can ever reach the goal of 10,000 barrels per day. They only need to ramp that up by a factor of 100 to support most of Southern California. 8-)

A bio fuel plant is being built in Grays County in Washington State as well. They are using algae, and I think are trying for gasoline as well.
