Two things: Engaged(!)and new Mac! Wow!
#1
Got very surprised on my other half's birthday tonight. I'm completely shocked(though it's been 7 years)and blinded by the ring as well. We will marry in May or October 2009.

Also, received the Powerbook I got on eBay. I'm overall very happy with it(opened box, powered up, joined network using WPA2-all within maybe 3 minutes)... just need some questions answered and the whole thing is a bit odd. I didn't know the guy was going to leave ALL of his personal stuff on it... down to needing a password to start it up, 'his' account was up. I guessed until I figured it out, but got a bit worried that I wouldn't guess right! He left a bunch of programs, over FIVE THOUSAND songs and TV episodes, a ton of stuff in the bookmarks bar, yet only 10gb is taken up! I can't figure that out. He had his preferences set up really strangely, so there was a lot to tweak. I've only had a few minutes to mess with it so far.

I can't get the serial number to come up on Apple's website, also strange. Below is a copy of what's in 'about this Mac'. It's supposed to have a Combodrive, but I'm not sure it isn't just a DVD drive-under 'burning' it says 'none'.

Can I get rid of his account without wiping the drive?

It's 500mhz, not 550mhz as advertised-I think that's just ignorance, since he has 100% feedback and I can't imagine lying about such a small difference when the buyer won't be happy to find the lower speed upon arrival. Packing was really bad, though-both left and right sides weren't taped at all and you could almost remove the computer by prying either side. It was super easy to tell it was a laptop, anyway. I can't believe it isn't damaged(though there is styrofoam residue all over including a line across the screen).

QT110265JF8 Machine Name: PowerBook G4

Bus Speed: 100 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.1.8f5

I haven't told the guy it arrived yet, nor left feedback. It's working fine, I find it's fast enough and haven't had a problem with it-what would you guys do?

Thanks,

wipe it clean and start over.

I would have wiped it, but kind of like some of the stuff he's got in there, AND I'm too lazy, additionally. If it wasn't up to date I probably would have... the only thing that isn't upgraded is iLife, and that machine won't be used for photos anyway-just iTunes.

Wow, this is great news....

and getting engaged isn't so bad either.

just kidding.

There is a way to create a new admin account and delete the old; saving all the old files, apps, etc.

PM me if you want instructions how to.

You should able to reset the admin account using any OS X install disc.

Interesting, one line about getting engaged and over 20 lines concerning an eBay PowerBook. :-)

Congratulations on both.

I should clarify Smile . He's had the ring since I picked out the stone in August... I already had my gown, wedding band, etc. purchased, so it's not a complete surprise. I also didn't want to gush forever to people who might not be that excited... and I was on the phone/IM with multiple people at the same time. I don't care that it's been so long-we're not in a great hurry and have been working towards this for years. Then he had a hard time settling on the perfect way to present it to me(that did take a while). Can't blame him!

Here is the other new hardware:
The RING!

Does that help to balance out all the PB stuff? Thanks for the advice on that, I like the idea of deleting the account while maintaining the files.
