Why specifically used car wax?

Whatever are you talking about?

Zymol gained a name for itself during the "Conspicuous Consumption" 1980s by offering car waxes that were "individually formulated for your car's specific finish": It was available by mail-order only, and you were asked to provide the year, make, model, and exact color of your car when you ordered. It was absurdly expensive, and period tests found it to be no better than common auto parts store brands like Turtle Wax.
Zymol has since made available a line suitable for all car finishes, but I haven't seen any unbiased comparisons between this newer version and other off-the-shelf brands. The only brand of car wax that dramatically impressed me with it's ease of application, ease of removal, and depth of shine was Nu Finish liquid. In a comparison test between common car waxes, Consumer Reports was every bit as impressed as I was with Nu Finish liquid.

Car enthusiasts rave about Zaino. I want to try it.

Reminds me that it is that time of the year when I should wash and wax my car and truck!
Next week, or the week after, or...

I tried Turtle Wax Ice on my new car. It goes on very easy and looks wonderful. It doesn't leave any white residue and can be used on plastic as well. It does not harm the rubber and doesn't leave a residue there either, so you can just wipe it over the whole car except the glass and wipe it off ten minutes later. Great stuff. Takes about ten minutes to apply and ten to wipe off--apparently it does not last as long as a standard car wax but I don't mind because it's so easy.

Zymol (the genuine stuff, not the Turtle Wax licensed junk) was all the rage in car detailers forums back in the mid-90s but I alot started to go Zaino. I never used the wax, but I used the car wash for years.
I used Zaino products on my car a while back. It looked sweet but took too much work and time. Easier to just give a pro $200 and use my time more productively. Plus the stuff is not cheap if you have to buy all the various products needed. It's more than just the wax.

Long ago I bought some Zymol at a garage sale (couple of bucks for the remaining 1/4 tin or so). As I recall, it was a lot more difficult to remove the dried wax than anything else I had ever used. A LOT more. You'd really want to go back quickly to buff off the section you had just waxed, or it became a real chore.
I don't know if all the good carnuba waxes are like that, or if my stuff had changed from age... but based on that experience, without use of a power buffer I would not recommend Zymol unless you're looking for a workout. |
