Hey gang,
I'm having a rooftop bbq party later on tonight and I bought some mussels for the event. I was planning to cook them in one of those foil pans. Throw in some butter, garlic and what else to call it a day? Should I use water or chicken broth? Wait, scratch the chicken broth...some folks may not eat stuff from the land. Oh! White wine? How long do they normally take on the grill, about 15 minutes or so?
Thanks y'all.

Until they open. Discard any that don't open.
Doesn't take long, just for the liquid to heat up

I like my recipes how I like my women,, quick and dirty.
Along with your wine, garlic, butter concoction,,,,
Throw in a can of thick coconut milk. Some chopped up basil if you got it. Don't go buying basil. If you got some, use it. If not forget it. A couple shots of asian fish sauce. A couple squirts of lime.
It's all about the sauce. Don't forget to buy some dollar store styrofoam mini bowl thingys and spoons to eat with. You can't really eat mussels with forks and paper plates.
I guess there will be tons of bread at the BBQ too,, so no need to buy a fancy french baguette or anything. Wonder bread or even hot dog rolls is fine to soak up all that saucy goodness. Quick and dirty.

errrrrr the lime is a good idea, as for the rest I think one wants to be able to savor the Mussels as for the white bread and hotdawg buns I would suggesttfeeding those to the birds *(:>*

You have it exactly right. Put one of those aluminum trays on the grill, add the liquid, add the mussels and close the lid on the grill.
Edit: Time is 15-30 minutes, depending on how well your grill heats.
Your idea of wine, garlic and butter for the liquid is the ticket. Add a little lemon too, and some thyme if you have it, and float some thin slices of lemon in the sauce to make it look nice. You probably won't need any, or much, salt at all.
If you don't intend to cover the aluminum tray, add a little more liquid because some of it will evaporate. And speaking of that, if you were to toss some vegetables, say some chunks of squash, pepper and onions, in some oil and vinegar and herbs, and grill those vegetables at the same time as the mussels, then they would pick up the perfume of the wine and garlic and they would be delicious.
Don't forget the pepper, and get a couple of loaves of good crusty bread to sop up the sauce.
I'll be right over.

Thanks for the suggestions y'all. I think the simpler the better. The standard garlic, butter, wine and love combo is probably best.
Gutie, did you mean one of the foil covers or did you mean using the lid as a cover?

Just any kind of tinfoil. Crimp some foil over the tray so the mussels steam in the broth, but if the grill has a cover you don't have to. You should always cover mussels when you are cooking them on the stove.
