going to buy an apple tv today
#1
I'm 99% sure I'm going to pickup an apple tv this morning. It will be used primarily for playing music with an occasional movie. I have two questions.

The first is how to modify it. I know there is a program I can download to a memory stick for around $60 that lets it playback more movie formats but I don't remember what it is called. I'm not interested in hacking it myself, I just want to buy the program.

The second question is about streaming. I want to make sure streaming of movies and music works well as I plan to buy the smaller of the two regarding storage.

Thanks for any info.

This seems to be a good place to pick up what's going on with Apple TV mods:

For what its worth, I was seriously thinking about modding my Apple TV. I haven't moved forward with that. The only thing I am missing is playing previously ripped movies that were in incompatible codecs with the Apple TV. I was thinking I would transfer those movies to a USB2 drive and plug them into my home theater system and I can access them from there. Not an elegant solution but a very simple one.

Still undecided about modding the Apple TV

Are those apple TVs safe or good? Do they come with free sushi?

beerman, I haven't modified my ATV, but I can tell you about my experiences with streaming.

I picked up the smaller drive ATV with the thought of replacing the HD to store more content. But once I figured out how to stream, I found that it works very well.

It might take a few seconds to wake up the drives I'm streaming from, but once it gets going there is rarely a hiccup. Movies, TV, pics, music, with virtually no problems whatsoever.

If you pick up the aTV Flash, let us know how it performs. I am converting some video from non supported formats to Apple TV format, but the conversion quality isn't quite there.

Sushi has some powerful mind-altering properties...

Streaming on the AppleTV works perfectly. Hacking is fairly complicated - not worth it in my opinion.

How many music files do you have that are incompatible with Apple?
