My mom just sent this link on a news story in Seattle: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/lo...er25m.html
I hate to be so morbid but has that turned into a big news story? I'm just a bit in shock because the missing kid is the son of my parents' former neighbor.
Any new details on what happened? All I've found is that he disappeared while trying to swim out to a buoy and is presumed dead.

there were a gajillion emergency vehicles streaming past the bar Thursday night towards Shilshole Bay/Shilshole Ave. Must have been the swimmer 911 call. We stopped counting after a dozen. Fire Trucks, cops, battalion commander Suburbans, aid cars, Port of Seattle cops (shiloshole bay marina is Port of Seattle run/owned) and some others I am sure I missed.
Don't know what to tell you. When a swimmer drowns in Lake Union/Washington, far less of a turnout. I assume they believed there was a chance they could find him, and he may have been still alive.

It's not big news 30 miles south, I do know that. I hadn't heard about it at all. Unfortunately, there's one heck of a lot of water up here, and drownings are, sadly, not uncommon. They were in the Sound, and the water is extremely cold there, which means people die more quickly than those who have trouble in the warmer waters of the lakes. A woman drowned a couple of miles from my house a week ago, and it didn't even make the newspaper, although I saw it in the "Lights and Sirens" section on the newspaper's website.
There's an interesting inconsistency of sorts in that article. They're not calling the death suspicious, yet they don't know where the truck belonging to his parents is. That's rather strange. You'd think someone would know, because the assumption is that the young man was driving it.
Why don't you e-mail the person who wrote the story? The reporters here are usually quite responsive, so it would be worth writing to see if there are more details available.

I noticed that too. I also noticed something else that most people wouldn't pick up on - the truck still has NM license plates. The family moved over a year ago. Why would it still have NM plates if they've been there for so long?
I was just sorta shocked to see this & was hoping for better information or updates.
Just a strange story - supposedly not suspicious yet the truck is missing but not stolen?
[edit] I should clarify the bit about the truck not being stolen - i found that info in this link: http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/seatt...146982.asp

That's not uncommon. Some people just don't like going through the hassle of re-registering a vehicle. It's also kind of easy to "hide" up here, especially in my area, because there are so military. Out of state plates don't arouse any suspicion.
Hey, Racer! I was just watching the news; that's some storm you guys had up there while Louie was basking in the sun on the deck. Rain? Thunder? Hail? A tornado?!

Yeah, swimmers go missing fairly regularly. I've tried to swim in those waters. Even when it's 100° out, those waters are cold. When I went in, my feet were fully cramped up by the time I was knee deep.
Doesn't seem like big news.

Once I noticed that information on this story was fairly limited, I figured it wasn't big news but I was still hoping to find more info. on the story. The missing truck bit makes the story seem a bit suspicious.
The same thing happens here, AlphaDog - a lot of people can get by with expired plates from other states. I just find it curious that this particular family still has NM plates.
Hopefully I'll remember to scan the news links in a few days to see if there are any updates.
MAVIC - if you remember, there are a surprising number of drownings/people missing in the water around here (thanks to the arroyos in ABQ & the "big" reservoirs like Abiquiu and Elephant Butte). Of course, since we don't have any more important news stories to cover here, drownings & missing people are always big news!
This story just hit a bit too close to home & I was hoping for more details.

I"m hundreds of miles south of Seattle...
And around here, the Coast Guard has more or less admitted that if someone goes into the water out past the bar without a wetsuit, and they haven't found them in 45 min to an hour, It's not a "rescue" operation any more. They keep up 100% effort longer than that, but hope fades pretty fast without SOME sort of protection.

Seems like there is at least one drowning every week - waters here are not "user friendly". We have cold water all year long, strong currents, steep drop offs.
Lakes and rivers are no more forgiving.
I hadn't seen the reports of this one, though.

Many people will ignore the 90-day rule and wait until their out-of-state plates are ready to expire before registering their car in their new state. Most states will make you pay the local sales tax on the car when your register it in your new state, regardless of whether you paid sales tax in the state you just left. It's a real ripoff. There also might be differing insurance rules. For instance years ago there used to be a whole lot of Maine license plates in Maryland because Maine didn't require auto insurance to register a car. I think that has since changed. I don't know what the rules and laws are in NM and Wash.
