My experience with Perl, vs. those with Rails
#1
Perl plugins are easy, and have good documentation. FTP modules, archive modules, date manipulation modules...all have provided me with excellent utility and minimal effort.

Rails itself is actually fine. Setting up relationships is simple, and even with the trouble I'm about to describe, I wouldn't consider doing this sort of web development stuff by hand. But I've had troubles with both attachment_fu and the login gem which have...just...been...kicking...my...butt.

Install 'em...fine. Restart server...fine. :has_errors => you betcha.

I know Perl and Rails have far different histories, but from my perspective, they're just tools I'm trying to pick up as I go along.

This is absolutely no fun right now.

I think you've been lucky! When I've tried to parse perl scripts, it's like looking for a needle in a manure pile.

Skip perl and rails, and go straight to python.

That's more a function of the author than the language.
