DVDs burned on Vista not readable with Tiger
#1
Problem encountered by a friend:

"We have a DVD with copies (pdf files) of our journal for 2000-2004. These DVDs were burned on a PC running Vista. Those of us running Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) cannot read the disc; OS 10.4 usually identifies that there is a disc in the drive but says it has no files. Those running Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) read the discs without problems. We know of at least two computers running 10.5 that open the discs and at least three computers running 10.4 that cannot open the disc.

Is there an incompatibility issue with DVDs burned under Vista being read on Macs running OS X 10.4? I've never encountered a problem like this before. I looked at Apple's support page and Googled the problem but couldn't find any information."

DVD and CD not readable I found out burned on VISTA! I did a regular burn and they would not play when I got home on my PCs or Macs

A quick google search on the subject yielded this: http://forums.mactalk.com.au/13/47151-re...vista.html

[edit]From the same google results - an article on the new format: http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/window...ows/?p=539

It all boils down to the fact that this new format is the default for Vista and that most "average joe" type user won't know that they SHOULD change it to the more compatible format when they send it to other people!

Thanks, Stephanie. That appears to be the answer.

Bottom line, M$ doesn't use the worldwide standard of UDF as the default. Oh, What A SURPRISE!

M$ wants the world to conform to THEIR "standards" - not the other way around. Compatibility with other OS versions or other OSes??? NO! If they don't have compatibility, then they hope/think that everyone will upgrade to Vista or dump their Macs or Linux boxes!

Resistance is futile...or so they would like to believe.

More and more people are wising up to MS tricks. They don't necessarily understand what the stuff doesn't work, but they're realizing that it is costing them enormous amounts of money when it should 'just work'.
