Comcast... sigh
#1
I cancelled my Comcast internet account about 15 months ago and they still haven't closed my email accounts. And they're still emailing me promotions.

The latest is an offer to upgrade to their fastest service. Yay, for just $10/month more, I can get their faster service. (But since I'm currently paying them zilch per month, unfortunately their fine print precludes me from getting internet service for $10/month. Wink) And by the way, since Verizon doesn't compete here with FIOS, Comcast's speed in my area is only half the speed of the FIOS-competing regions.

Anyway, this fabulous offer to upgrade my speed comes two days after their email informing me of their change in terms of service which limits the total monthly bandwidth (under penalty of termination of service). Why would I want to pay them $10 extra per month for the ability to hit their bandwidth limit that much quicker?

Comcast is still talking out of both sides of their mouth.

And this surprises you . . . ? ? ? ? ?

I hope to move soon, and be out of their territory . . . I can't wait.

I keep getting solicitations from them for high speed internet, and I already subscribe, which is why they have my name, and not just occupant. I also get one addressed to "occupant' and XXXXb Xth ave because about a decade ago, the former owner rented out the downstairs to co-eds.

Happy to say Comcast has been pretty much 100% reliable for me for at least 10 years.

And the bandwidth limit is 250 gigs a month, not something 99% of their users will ever come close to.

Oh, at no point have I ever said they weren't reliable. Just crappy customer service, and way overpriced when they know you have no other high-speed options based on your address. There is a 6 block by 3 block island in my neighborhood where there is no FIOS or DSL service. I'm in the middle, and they couldn't care less if I am a customer or not.

When the city of Tacoma became their own cable and internet provider and wired the entire city for fiber optic service, Comcast gave anyone who asked internet or expanded basic for $10 a month for 2 years. I guess we know how low they will go when they aren't the only game in town, and their stranglehold slips.

Only a decade ago? Comcast still has mail sent to me at "Apt. 1". My house was split into 2 units decades ago (4?), and was returned to single family housing almost 30 years ago. I've owned the place for just over 20 of those years.

consider yourself lucky that you can choose. my community "opted in" to Comcrap for 10 years, guaranteeing no competition.

Oh, believe me, I do.

And as far as reliability, I didn't have a lot of problems with Comcast. Although AT&T has been even better; virtually perfect. My only complaint with Comcast (up until they started forging TCP packets and imposing bandwidth limits) was the price. They just refused to be price-competitive with AT&T.

I'm kind of bummed out that Comcast is discontinuing the Giganews Usenet newsgroup access. Yeah, sure I only check the groups a couple times a month at most but...
