The idea -- to show interesting people who identify as PC users -- isn't bad, but it is poorly executed. It is aimed at people who, like Bill Gates, didn't understand the premise of the Apple campaign; John Hodgman is not portraying a "PC User" but an actual WIndows-based PC. Worse, it starts with an image appropriated from the Apple campaign ("Redmond, starts your copying machines..." ) Edit: Fscking smilies. I wanted to put a quote in parentheses. I did not want to put a stupid little yellow face at the end of the sentence.

Seems to me like MS is trying to twist the Mac ads into mean spirited insults aimed at PC users. Did they really not understand the premise of Apple's ads or are they just being underhanded? "Oh look what Apple thinks of you PC users. Don't buy a Mac."

I think they've done a great job at reinforcing old stereotypes...
mac people are uppity etc. I think they probably did a focus group and found that staunch PC users felt abit put off by the Apple ads and felt they were persoanlly being portrayed as a geek doofus. The agency latched onto that and used it to portray Apple as not respecting the individuality of the users themselves. And they used the most overused cliche in TV commercials... the rapid succession of many people's faces all either saying the same thing or finishing people's sentences. Unfortunately, broadly speaking, it was a smart move. Non switchers still want to feel good about their purchase too. 3P

Microsoft’s “I’m a PC” Ads - Made on a Mac
http://cultofmac.com/microsofts-im-a-pc-...a-mac/2971 There's also unnamed source that says the audio for the ad was mixed on a mac...

It's a poorly done commercial.
But as others earlier opined, it's probably the start of another brilliant MS campaign whose genius will be revealed down the road. Certainly MS needs to "fight back" and they've certainly taken their time doing so. But they really need to do their commercials better. At this point I think they're confusing more people than they're attracting.
