MANdatary Saturdays for the time being for us Salaried folk
#1
Crap. Well, I knew it was coming. When the hourly folk get cut back, we have to pick up the slack. I wonder when I'll be put out in the factory. Good thing my hands are getting calloused from raking leaves.

Beats layoffs, though. My company doesn't lay people off when they have more than 3 years tenure. I mean not since the policy was put in place in 1935 ! They do cut hours and reassign jobs.

Our hourly staff is just starting to come back to work. They had lay offs because of the strike at Boeing. The irony was that they were members of the same union.

I guess you can consider yourself lucky. I heard a radio story on layoffs recently that said years ago, a worker would be called back when times got better for the company. How quaint! Imagine that, you could in theory get a job when times were better. I don't think that has been in place anywhere in contemporary society with the exception of unions. Some companies see a period of layoffs as a way to simply hire new workers at lower wages (and to their detriment, since any worker must be trained to some degree and there is inherent liability and cost in that).

I'm sorry that your boss is asking you to be a volunteer for the company. Times like this call for video clips like this: Umm yeah I'm going to need you Saturday

that sucks, but better than losing your job.

Yesterday a friend told me that her company is making almost everyone take the week between Christmas and New Year's as an unpaid holiday and her husband's company is making all their employees take 4 unpaid days off before the end of the year.

Neither one is complaining even though they can't really afford it. They are just happy their companies are doing something to avoid layoffs.

Scary.

And....I expect it to get worse. Is anybody here preparing?

My brother in law got his 90 day notice this week. He is not optimistic about finding a job that pays as well. He's considering going back to school.

Yes, I am preparing, but I'm not getting very far. I am self employed and work on commissions which have been dwindling at a rapid rate. Two of my 8 lines have closed up shop and not too many are looking for reps so it will be hard to replace them.

I am ok for the next two months, but after that, who knows.

I have been looking for temp work and part time jobs but the main problem is that come January, I am on the road for trade show season, so part time work is going to be virtually impossible.

I am literally sick to my stomach all the time but I don't want to give up just yet. I am single so there is no other income to fall back on (and thankfully, there are no kids to support.) I am very lucky that my mom has offered to help if I need it. Hopefully, it won't come to that but it might.

paid hours are being cut from 40 to 35 starting next week for non-salaried employees in my dept.

to avoid letting any one person go.
