Usually, since they often come in a plain brown box. Some come in original packaging, but that is the exception in my experience. Depends on who you are giving it to, almost all the refurbs I got to be gifts were for family who understood the importance of getting as much as possible for the price.

I'm not buying it. Well, I'm buying it for a friend without a computer to give away. She would definitely like to save money.

If someone is giving me an iPod Touch, I sure wouldn't complain about it being a refurb.
one way around it, take it out of the packaging, fully charge it and put in in a brand new carrying case, loaded with music and movies the person likes. That way they can use it from the moment they get it and will never even think about the packaging.

but then you have to buy the case and those movies and music, which defeats the purpose of saving money.

Have Apple send one to me and I'll let you know if I can tell whether it's new or refurb.

You might also consider ebay..
I bought my 2nd generation 32GB iPod Touch New on ebay for $300 + $13 shipping. I bought it with 30% Microsoft Live Cashback at the time, so my net price will be $223 shipped for a $400 iPod. I've seen the same model list for as low as $250 with free shipping, cashback is currently 25%, which means you could do as low as $188. Cashback is also instant sometimes. (Live cashback is usually 60 days + 7-14 days to receive payment, last week it was changed to allow for immediate cashback payments in certain situations which haven't been figured out yet. If you don't get immediate cashback, the waiting period has changed to just 60 days) http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/hot-deals/838081 Read the quick summary. Yes, it looks complicated but really isn't.

Who cares if it's refurbished. They are as good as new and come with the same warranty. If someone is put off by the fact that it is refurbished, then they don't deserve your generosity.

My daughter's was refurb, the packaging is a little different though it doesn't say refurb on it. The iPod itself looked brand new. My daughter not being familiar with Apple packaging couldn't tell the difference.
