Some news reporter must have a sense of humor.

Mexican citizen busted for crabs

Associated Press - December 9, 2008 12:35 PM ET

McALLEN, Texas (AP) - U.S. Customs agents at a South Texas international bridge have seized 191 units of an unusual sort of contraband - hermit crabs.

Agents ever on the lookout for drugs, guns and money caught a 49-year-old Mexican citizen from McKinney who was returning to the United States at the Hidalgo crossing. U.S. Customs and Border Protection said today that its officers found a box full of live hermit crabs inside his vehicle and another bag of the crabs in the trunk.

The 191 crabs taken in the November 30th bust were given to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the man was issued a $1,910 fine for not declaring the crabs.

Two reasons

1. some levity to this side. I'm assuming the headline gave you a double take like it did me. Double entendre......

2. If I post this article to the other side someone will say what you just said. Or start saying I'm a racist or don't like mexicans.

Samintx,
I am pretty sure everyone gets it.
The problem is, taken in the context of past posts you've made and past positions you've subscribed to, there's kind of a nagging undercurrent which hints at, fairly or unfairly, a desire on your part to play up the "dirtiness" of mexicans. And also a bit of a background nag of "why does she seek out negative stories about mexicans" and "did she get this from some right wing blog-type site that cherry-picks articles that support an agenda of intolerance?" And/or the reporter who didn't decide that the headline may be perceived as being in bad taste, especially by people of mexican decent who are already sensitive to the propogation of common stereotypes, as having a bit of an "agenda."
