DVD upgrade questions for G4
#1
I am upgrading a G4 450 Sawtooth and have several questions about adding a DVD burner:

1. Which drive: Pioneer DVR-110D or Pioneer DVR-111D? (each about $38)

2. Internal or external: make any difference?

3. Will I be able to burn CDs and DVDs natively from OS X 3.9 or will I need addt'l sw?

Thank you!

If I recall correctly, the drives are fully supported in 10.4 for Apple apps and 3rd party apps, and will work fine in 10.3 using Toast or 3rd party burn software, but require Patchburn to be able to burn with Apple apps in Panther.

Patchburn 3 will make most current DVD burners function natively with Apple software in that machine.

but for any real burning, I would get Toast 7. I have been using since '97 with Toast 3.5 and a 2x SCSI external burner.

Either the current NEC or Pioneer is a good choice. I have heard (but no real proof from an unbiased 3rd party source based on any real testing data) that the pioneer may last a bit longer, and that the NEC may be quieter. The Pioneer can be quieted, but you need a PC to run the hacked firmware, and the quiet utility from Pioneer.

yea, forgot about quiet utility. I didn't think the 110D was overly noisy, but I had stuck the drive in one of our PCs to flash the firmware so I ran the utility while I was there.

I also think the quiet utility slows down ripping speed, and fast data transfers when reading from the drive. It just spins it slower AFAIK.
