CCC error message-what does this mean?
#1
I don't know what the problem is. I am trying to use Carbon Copy cloner on my external hard drive-WD My Book (800 Firewire). For days I have been trying to make a clone of my iMac. No luck...

I have turned everything off, done a SMC reset, zapped PRAM, switched cables, used Disk Utility to repair disk, repair permissions, erase and repartition the drive to a single partition, run Disk Warrior on the external drive (it reports no problems).

Any other ideas? Happy holidays to all :-)

Below is the error message which appeared after ~4 hours of running...

Safe-boot (hold down the shift key on startup) and set CCC to erase the target drive before cloning.

If that doesn't work, switch to SuperDuper.

I have erased the target drive prior to using CCC.

I actually can't get SuperDuper! to work either. Can a corrupted file hose both programs? If DiskWarrior is finding nothing wrong then what else can I do?

Did you safe-boot?

That's an important troubleshooting step when clone operations are unsuccessful.

have you run diskwarrior on the internal drive or just the external? I couldn't tell from your reply. And...you are running the most recent versions of all of the programs (CCC, SD, DW)? what version of the os?

I ran Disk Warrior on the external drive and will try it on the internal drive when I get home from work.

I have never used the Safe Boot. Would that matter given that I erased the external drive and have checked it with Disk Utility and Disk Warrior?

I have the most current versions of everything, including Mac OS.

Thanks!

I would try DW on the internal drive. You'll need to either boot the computer with the DW CD and run it, or boot up the imac in firewire target mode (hold down the "t" key during startup) and run DW on it from another mac.

Safe boot cleans out caches and other cruft on your internal drive/system and should have nothing to do with the external drive. It's good to do a safe boot every once in a while, or if you're having seemingly unexplainable issues.

Have you thought of using Migration Assistant?

I received a prompt reply from SuperDuper! after I sent the error log.

Very fast response by the way!

He said it looks like a drive failure with many errors in input/output (given all the other things I have tried and since Carbon Copy Cloner doesn't work either).

He said they don't recommend Western Digital My Book external drives due to increased chance of failure.

So that was money down the drain (it lasted a little over a year).

Does anyone have a rock solid favorite? I have an open 800 firewire port now. The 400 port on my iMac is nonfunctioning and I just never have had it fixed...

Rip that hard drive out of that clunker and put it in a cheap USB 2 case (once you figure out whether it's IDE or SATA).
If It's IDE Radioshack has been blowing out a nice aluminum fanless MacAlly for $10.
If it's SATA I have several of these and like 'em a lot:
