I hate to be the one to break it to you, but the whole concept of memetics, at least so far as it may be analogous to genetics, is beginning to lose favor among many scientists (see Paul Ehrlich, The Dominant Animal: Human Evolution and the Environment). I feel some responsibility since I did as much as anyone to propagate its use here, in my own quest for smugnicity. Anyhow, this simple flow chart should clear things up:

I was really shocked when I received this from my brother in law yesterday. He's one of the most conservative people I know, and I'm sure he's never voted for a Democrat in his life. Sending out something that appears to mock Sarah Palin was nothing I ever thought he'd do! He is now in his mid-80s, so maybe Alzheimer's is setting in.
