Saw Milk last night - don't miss it!

It's NOT a movie that has to be seen on the big screen, but it does have to be seen.

Of the many great roles Penn has performed over the years, this one is THE best. Wonderful performances by all. Really captures the period and the place.

I met one of the characters of the story, Cleve Jones. Back in the 80s, I was visiting a friends house for the first time. Got close to the address, but was a little confused. Asked aguy hanging out for help and he gave it. On the way out, this guy was being interviewed by a SF TV/Radio station (this was in sacramento). They were just packing up and I asked the guy what it was all about.

He said that Dan White committed suicide that day and the crew was there to interview him. I never knew anything about his involvement in the story until I saw the movie. Had no idea he was such a wild guy. He could have passed for a republican bookkeeper.

I'm pretty good at spotting non-period stuff in period films-- didn't catch anything in this one.
Good film, and timely with the prop 8 crap going on.

**a bit of a spoiler**

Really, the thing I liked most about the movie was the portrayal of Dan White. I could never understand how a guy could come to do such a horrible thing. I found the relationship btwn White and Milk very interesting. The film certainly shows that White had good reason to be seriously pissed at Milk. Not good enough for murder, but I expected the film to portray Milk as a saint. He wasn't and the film shows this well.

It looks like a fab movie that I've yet to see. Will for sure, though. I agree, Penn is as good an actor as we have now and doesn't get half the credit he deserves.

My first exposure to the story was about 20 years ago through the Dead Kennedy's cover of "I Fought The Law" with altered lyrics that addressed the story. Such a great band at a great point in time.

"Twinkies are the best friends I ever had..."

I second all the thoughts above -- great film, and amazing performances by Penn et al. I was fortunate enough to be in San Francisco last week when I saw it, and it made my visit more poignant when I happened by a few of the spots from the movie. Definitely a must-see.

Just saw this film today. Fantastic. Penn is great. All the casting is perfect - everybody even looks like the person they were casted for...

They didn't portray milk as a saint at all, which I think helps the message. I left the film with renewed anger vs. all the prop 8 garbage. It helps you see, IMO, the gay rights struggle as a continuum, with prop 8 being the latest frontier.

go see it..

No kidding! The shots of the real people at the end display how spot-on the casting (and makeup) was.

Agreed. I was almost amazed by that.

except, ironically for the one guy that I met, Cleve Jones - he was a very small guy like the actor (Emil Hirsch), but had thin blond hair, not thick curly brown locks.

here they are:
