Sean Penn is a god!
#1
...of cinema that is. We were in SF today and decided to go see Milk at the Castro. Horrors, it is no longer playing there. They have Sound of Music, a singalong, instead. Grumpy but determined, we returned to Berkeley and watched it there. The venue was sucky compared to the Castro, but the film was fantastic, and sucked me back to the 70s with the memories. It was great seeing the movie having just driven past many of the scenes in the film. I've always thought Sean Penn was a brilliant actor, but he really takes the cake in this one. He IS Milk! Oscar material for sure.

Everybody should see this movie, especially those who I expect will avoid it. A bit of an emotional roller coaster for many I would think.

For those who weren't in SF at the time, it was as though the sky had fallen. Just a couple of weeks earlier the people's Temple murders and suicides had come down like a dark cloud and almost everybody knew someone involved in that tragedy. Now suddenly the mayor and a historic figure of a supervisor have been slain. To top it off, the murderer got off with a slap on the wrist. I really had the feeling that the world had gone completely mad.

I must insert this Dean Penn quote:

Upon receiving an acting award:

"You tolerate me. You really tolerate me."

Now, back to the thread.

He was awesome as Spicolli in Fast Times. But his acting went downhill since then.

Gee, after his holding his own with Kevin Bacon, Lawrence Fishburne, and Tim Robbins in Mystic River, you really feel that way? I thought he was and is dynamic-

LOL. Sean Penn is an okay actor who's good at basically playing himself, which is fine so long as he's careful what roles he takes. I can't imagine him even trying to hold his own with an actress like Meryl Streep as Eastwood did.

William Shatner - now there's an acting God!

Yeah, because he's so much like his character in "I Am Sam"... LOL!

He's as good as any actor from his generation, IMO.

He's a very good actor, better than a lot of past and present.

And most actors would and do benefit by being careful about the roles they take.

Penn gets a lot of flak for being an actor and having a political opinion. People use that as an excuse to berate his acting.

But that happens to a lot of starts. A lot of people here and in general love to hate and bad mouth actors, among other categories of people.

Makes 'em feel "special".

Yeah, it's like coming here and opining why other people have opinions that they do about actors or what have you.

Makes 'em feel "superior".
