Got my new cell phone wrapped in newspaper
#1
Ordered a new unlocked Motorola phone on eBay. It arrived today not in the factory box as I fully expected but wrapped in a newspaper. It is new but I wanted to give it as a gift. Why is the box missing? Is it a gray market phone? Have contacted the seller to hear his explanation.

One thing I learned early on with sellers on eBay is that if it doesn't say it's included, don't expect it. There's "new", "new in box" and "new in original box", and even then sometimes it's a crap-shoot. It'll be interesting what explanation you get from the seller.

eBay has been suspect for years now. Do your self a favor, do not shop there.

What does this mean?
You're always on your own in terms of assuring you get your money's worth, be it eBay, Craigslist, at a flea market, etc.

Getting your money's worth is a given, but the pitfalls of scams and fraud are more common on eBay.

eBay as a company also has no conscience. They develop a culture of secrecy and take no responsibility when they help fraud happen.

I had a major issue with my account several years ago, and they refuse to provide any contact information other than email for dealing with a customer complaint. At one point, I demanded they provide me with a location to FAX my complaint and with a full contact (name, etc), and they simply refused.

I have a friend in a major bank, and here in Minnesota they process 10s of thousands of dollars in scams from eBay EACH MONTH. They absolutely hate it - and they seem to have no recourse to deal with that company.

Years ago, if you tried to cheat someone at a flea market, you were not invited back to sell your wares. When it happens at eBay, you change the spelling on your name - and voila! - you are ready to scam again.

If you have an issue with a seller at Amazon, you have somewhere to go to complain.

If you sell via Craigslist, you get to at least look at what you are purchasing and meet the seller in a public place if you want to.

I have two relatives that used to sell via eBay, and they have moved on because they so disliked the environment.

. . .back in the day they were great. . .but now they like to make money on all these transacdtions but when somthing goes wrong they take the stance that they are the middle man. . .they do nothing if you get scammed. . .avoid if you can. . .

Received a reply form the seller. Says the phone is brand new and if I don't believe him to call Motorola with the serial #. About the box, he says he did not promise that it comes in factory box. In all my years of purchasing on eBay I never had to worry about it. Were it not for the fact that I bought as a gift, it may not have mattered that much.

My real question is what happened to all the boxes? Do they bulk in bulk?

Yep. See my original comment. People accused me of being too wordy in my eBay listings, but I want people to know exactly what they're getting (and if relevant, what they're not getting).
