Is this from the Dell Outlet or for a new Mini 9?

I paid $255 before tax and after 15% coupon for a refurb 1GB/16GB/1.3 webcam/bluetooth/XP a few weeks ago.
Typing on it right now.

With netbooks running Windows/XP/etc, I presume.
They don't want their OS to appear RAM hungry?

I thought it was because they don't want XP to appear too viable nowadays. As I recall, the only reason XP was brought back from the brink was because of the crazy netbook trend, and so it's a compromise, "we'll offer you Windows, but not the 'Full Windows Experience'" in a new laptop --- that comes from Vista today, and RAM ..."
At least they aren't somehow dictating a physical hardware limitation, just betting (probably correctly) that netbook users bought partly because of price, and aren't about to then go and buy RAM for it, too. Same thing for netbook manufacturers --- they're offering Linux as a cost-cutting option, which could permit them to stuff it with more RAM, but they tend to NOT do that, as a cost-cutting measure. A bit short-sighted if you ask me; they could use Linux as up-sell here, "you can get with Windows, or you can get it with Ubuntu and it'll be more responsive and let you have more apps running at the same time etc." |
