Mail App Indexing Question

I save far too many old emails in the Mail app on my 450 Mhz Cube but I like to have old emails accessible. Every time I click on a mail box, it seems to take forever for it to go through its indexing routine. I can't find where to turn off indexing. Is it even possible to turn it off?

You mean like System preferences / Spotlight Preferences under Privacy?

I would not expect to change a setting in System Preferences to affect the indexing in an application.

I checked System Preferences (running under 10.3.9) and did not see anything labeled "Privacy".
