And does it matter?
Seriously... in the old days it made a bid difference if a a printer had built-in support for postcript processing. Used to be able to buy it in software form for inkjets even.
But now it seems like NONE of the color laser printers even mention postscript support, or lack there of.
So, has something changed that makes postscript in lasers not important any more, or is still important, but just not to consumer/pro-sumers in the sub-$1000 printer market?
If it isn't important any more, why?
What instance *would* it still be important?
In other words, for a small non-profit that creates their own newsletters, and brochures, etc. in Quark or InDesign, can they do all right with a non-postscript printer for proofs, or do they still need to pony up big bucks.
Any recommendations are also appreciated.

The biggest problem is that they don't proof B&W ads for sh!t.

There are definatly PLENTY of Postscript printers out there... However, plenty of cheep postscript emulation printers and non-postscript printers....

Okay... so now I'm smiling because of the homage(s) to Peter, paul and Mary.
Still, is there a practical answer to my above question? Perhaps an online article that explains what the shifts in printer types to PS-emulation mean in practical terms.
Mick e, are their discussions of the why and where fors on the topic of B&W printing proofs problems?

Do you have some suggestions of printers worth their toner? I searched at epinions on "Postscript color laser printer" and got a bunch of printers... most non-postcript, some with "postscript 3" listed in parantheses after something else... for instance:
Brother HL-2700CN Color Laser Printer
Emulations: PCL6, PCL5c, BR-Script3 (PostScript 3), IBM Proprinter, Epson FX, HP-GL
That looks like *emulation* to me not the real thing. Very confusing.

Nowadays, hardware postscript emulation is typically very good. the Brother printers are well liked around here.
perhaps someone will speak up against this - but i don't see a difference between postscript and hardware postscript emulation.
