Just got word that my brother and soon-to-be S-I-L adopted a kitty from the Baltimore SPCA, after my suggesting it to them from your post ... original post here, if anyone's curious: http://forums.macresource.com/read/1/2451/2622#msg-2451
... don't know much yet, other than that it's a pretty calico female, and that she was shy at first, but has been warming up both to them and to their other cat. (She probably wasn't from the original batch from your post, but they were happy to adopt, especially to give their other cat some needed company.) Pics to come, eventually.

Thanks for adopting a rescue PeterB.
I volunteer at the local shelter here in Seattle, and as I type I have a domestic violence rescue kitty named Oliver living in our downstairs bathroom until his parents get their sh*t together. We are hoping that they get it sorted out and he can go home soon. Otherwise he may get adopted out. But for the time being he is with us so he won't catch anything at the shelter.

Racer X, well, I can't really take a kitty myself at this point, but it was easy enough for me to suggest to the bro and his fiancée; and since they are in Baltimore, it made sense to pass the info on, when I saw Gutie's post. Their other cat was actually also a rescue from the fiancée's mother-- a very friendly orange tabby who had lost his tail as a result of some horrible abuse by a bunch of schoolkids. They really wanted him to have some company, and this seemed a fine way to do it. From what I've heard, the two cats are even getting along well with each other so far...
What I did hear from my bro about the history was that this particular kitty-- they couldn't believe it-- had been adopted previously, but given up by the previous owner after a year or less. Don't recall what he said the exact reason was... it does seem that people give up cats for some pretty inane reasons.

Sorry about the confusion. But adoption is always a great way. Animals do get returned. But some of the reasons are just assanine.
One man brought a kitten back because her coat didn't match the couch his wife just bought! She decided that the couch was more important than the cat. I was there when he brought the little girl back and heard the whole explanation. I was both appalled and amused at the same time.

I am glad it worked out, Peter! That's wonderful. The Maryland SPCA is a good outfit.
People do return animals. My boy Moose was one of three cats, and the family could only keep two when they moved, so they turned Moose into the SPCA. I don't know how they made that choice.
I have turned a couple of stray dogs into the SPCA, and when they couldn't help one of them--he was too old to be adoptable--they called and I went back and got him, and he stayed with me for a couple of days till he found a permanent home.

That's kind of like saying she's a female girl.
Racer, we once got a cat back because he was "too affectionate". Luckily, he wound up in a way better home with two people who wanted an affectionate cat (how odd of them, eh?).

I have a friend who volunteers in greyhound adoption, and she says that so many people don't care a whit about the personality of the dog, they want a designer dog--usually the white with grey spots. She just got a black dog a year or so ago (black is the least popular color) who had been horribly treated at the track. With a lot of love and attention, he's turned into a lovely, affectionate and eccentric boy (he ate my reporter's credentials--I had to go back to the police to get them replaced. They thought it was hilarious.)

Why ka jot, are you implying that all calicos are pretty, or that they are all females? While I'd generally agree with the former, I'm pretty sure the latter is definitely false... X-chromosome inactivation... calico males are bicolor, calico females are tricolor; excepting the possibility of intersex animals. Of course, I'm using the term "calico" in the broadest sense... if you mean a "calico" to be defined as three colors, then yes, most calicos are female. http://caltest.vet.upenn.edu/genetic/coa.../page4.htm
Oh, and about the inane "reasons that people return pets" -- I had gotten the impression in this case that it was that the previous owners had just not had a good 'fit' with this particular cat, or something similar, or possibly an allergy issue. That seems to be a pretty common reason...

Calico means tricolor to anyone in the cat biz; I'm not aware of any "broader sense".
It's a sex-linked trait. Tortoiseshell coloring (black and red, grey and red) is also sex-linked (female). Many torties have a color "dividing line" in middle of the face/nose.
BTW around 80% of red cats are male.
