I have a MFC 6800 Brother printer and ordered a couple toner carts from SuperMedia. Always had good results with their stuff but never bought toner. I put the cart in and shoved it back into the printer - ungodly clacking sound. Pulled it and reinserted it - same issue. Put the original back in and works fine. Does this tell me that non-original carts are garbage or did I just get a bad one? According to the box, it's the right cart and looks pretty much like the Brother cart.

did you twist it correctly? Take off the tape/seal?
Check the internals for jams that might have fallen into the toner path?

Did the box look like a brand-new sealed original Brother toner cart? Chances are you might have just gotten a bum one.
FWIW, I use these guys:

Yes to all questions posed above - nothing in the path as once I reinserted the original Brother cart, it works fine. Even switched back to the new cart with same results and back again to the original. The housing is a bit different, mostly lacking a ridge that locates it at the right end near the latch tab, but it seemed to insert and lock just fine. I did remove the sticker, BTW. Maybe it's just not worth it to use cheap cartridges.

Sounds like it's not a compatible cartridge. A compatible third party cartridge should look exactly the same as the OEM. My guess is that the different housing is screwing it up.

Well, I guess I'll just write it off to experience. Maybe I'll open the second one and see if it looks the same - by the time I return it shipping will eat the refund anyway. I just ordered an original Brother cartridge for 3x the cost of the ones I bought, but what the hey... experience is the best teacher.

I've found with my MFC 6800 that non-Brother toners don't work well. I spring for the good stuff.

My non-brother stuff works splendidly.

Update: I got an email back from supermedia and he said try the other cart - which works fine. Still, I'll go with jardster from now on and stick to OEMs. By the time I factor in the shipping, return hassle, and so on,. I would have been just as well to buy a Brother cart in the first place. Now, inkjet printer carts - that's a whole 'nuther story...

But, the generics have always been great for me. So, don't taint the viability with one slip-up. Sorry to hear about your issue.
