iBook logic board swap?
#1
My nephews 18 month old 12" G4/800 iBook has a bad logicboard.
Can the G4/800MHz board be swapped for a G4/1.2 GHz?

Each are 12" iBooks. I have no issues doing it--I have done many repairs on iBooks, and down to the DC board on a 12" PB DVI-which is all the way.

Here are the symptoms-but even the AppleStore Genius agrees on the logicboard, and that is $300. There are incidents of this on the web, but it isn't covered under any extended warranty like the G3 iBooks.

We have tried everything-it hangs withing a few minutes of booting-sometimes no boot other times it works for 3-5 minutes. Same if booted in to an external drive. It will run for hours in Firewire target disk mode, so it isn't the drive.

Any input is appreciated. Thanks-Ken :-)

You have a big project on your hands. However, you say you're not shy about doing repairs on iBooks, so I think you should go for it. I guess there's no AppleCare on it, or you wouldn't be posting about it...that's a real shame. Wish I knew more about the subject, but I'd just be guessing about the logic boards being interchangeable. Perhaps someone with a lot more knowledge will give you some direction.

If iBooks are anyhthing like G5s though, each model has a specific logic board and they're not swappable.

It would be safer to pick up an 800mhz logicboard on eBay or an iBook with a working board but broken screen. the logic boards may not be a direct swap from 800 to 1.2ghz. You might have better luck with a 900mhz board.
