Is creating a 10.4.11 install disk possible?
#1
Since Apple last retail release of 10.4 was 10.4.6, is there a way to create a 10.4 install disk that will boot intel macs that were release after 10.4.6?
For example, I have a MacBook Pro Core Duo that won't boot the retail install disk that has 10.4.6 and I can't find the original disks that came with the MBP.
Thanks!

there were no retail Intel 10.4 installers, so it wouldn't work in any case.

I'm going to say that almost anything is possible, but this may not be practical...

To my knowledge, it would not be simple to do.

I'd like to be wrong about that though.

'Might be able to use DasBoot to make a bootable flash drive that'd contain the installation files and run the installer and updater.

That'd be real interesting to try.

So you think it's not possible to install 10.4.x on my MBP without the original disks? That stinks.

No one said that...

The question you ASKED was if you could BUILD a system install disk.

If you want to INSTALL 10.4 on your MBP, that's a slightly different question.

If you have a 10.4 installer that installs an Intel version, you could attach the MBP to some machine that that disk set supports via target disk mode, and run the installer that way (with the MBP as an external disk).

You could also clone a 10.4 boot drive from an intel machine to your MBP.

Hope this helps.

How can you tell if the Apple Retail disk containing 10.4.6 will install on an intel if I only have that one MBP?

The cloning thing is a good idea and I might have to do that. Do you think SuperDuper is the best for that?

Thanks so much.

Sounds like you need to find an orphaned OEM Intel-specific OS 10.4.x installer on eBay or elsewhere. Best would be one new enough to boot your machine, and then you can upgrade further to OS 10.4.11 after installation

You might also try calling AppleCare and ask if you can purchase replacement media for the install disks that originally shipped with your product. I have never done this, but if I were in this situation that is the first thing I would try.

No retail 10.4 discs were ever sold by Apple that would install on an Intel Mac of any sort. The only source for discs on the used market are the ones shipped with the Intel Mac's. You would have to find one for that model MacBook Pro or sometimes one from a later model will work.

Besides that, you could try contacting Apple's software disc replacement service, they can authorize shipping out a replacement installer disc for your MacBook Pro. It will be a DVD-R copy of the original if they still have ones going back that far. I used to have a contact article for that, but they have changed the Apple website since then. The last time I used it was when the refurbished Black MacBook I bought last Fall came with two copies of one of the installer DVD's and was missing the other. Since it was new, they sent it out no charge, there is/was a charge for replacing lost discs for older machines. I was transferred to them from the Applecare line.

(started work on this post earlier, but was interrupted. GGD got here first with the replacement service suggestion)
