You mean the engineers couldn't find an extra 15 millimeters to have the SD card
fully insert?
Here is a picture of the new SD card fully inserted in action:

They left a little extra so your fat-fingered chubbies could get a grip.

It's good that it can't. I have a Nikon D40 with a click-lock mechanism that doesn't work anymore that I'm going to dismantle. I'm sure that could be the same way.

It sticks out like that on the Dell mini 10v as well.

Good, it leaves something to hold onto for removal. Don't know how many times I have had to help someone remove a slightly out of spec SD card from one of those slots that leave nothing to hold onto for removal. And the card is a hair too thick or short, just enough to make it harder to remove.

I would be concerned about putting the laptop in a bag or case w/o removing the card, or I would be concerned about forgetting to remove it.
Not good design, you should be able to keep removal media inserted fully in a full-size portable in my perfect Apple world.
Damage awaits the forgetful user who tosses the Macbook in a case.

Well, that would be the "perfect Apple world", the ejector would work 100% of the time and it would take several different forms of flash RAM cards. But instead they gave a one format slot, took out the ExpressCard slot that could have had a fairly inexpensive multi-format card reader inserted into as needed. So Apple misses "perfect" by a different margin once again. Or at least for some users such as yourself with CF or other non-SD card formats.
