Polyamory - a mom's nightmare?
#1
My 21 year old son is involved in a similar relationship:

Am I just too old to appreciate this? Would sure appreciate some fresh perspectives

i think your reaction has more to do with cultural expectations than age. i'm sure there have been many communities throughout history where this is not unusual.

i would think polyamory would require a high degree of honesty, trust, and self-confidence. perhaps few of us can achieve those qualities to the point where the situation would be comfortable for us.

As long as they're all on the same page regarding monogamy, or the lack of monogamy, then I see no problem. It's when one partner wants monogamy and the other doesn't (and is dishonest about it) that problems arise. And unfortunately, that's the more common situation.

I can't see anything "wrong" with it, especially with no children involved, but it does seem like there could be more than a few complications.

For one, "I don't feel sexual jealousy in that way," one of them says. 'Sexual' jealousy. Qualifications already starting to creep in.

Another, "There were things like, 'You're just a slut.' That was really hurtful. I laugh about it, because I don't want to cry," she said." Quite natural feelings, but it does show that societal pressure isn't exactly rolling off her back. More pressure on the relationship.

And with both of the men still dating around, issues like STDs and further emotional entanglements are redoubled.

But, no one's having a gun held to their head, so good luck to them.

I'll mind my business if they mind theirs.

You got all that from a magazine article. It must be amazing to realize that everybody in the world shares your exact same values!

So long as no children are involved, I say let them have fun. That takes a handful of freaks out of circulation.

The girl is also getting sex with no commitment. At no point in that article did I get the impression that she wanted otherwise. I don't think anyone is deluding anyone here.
