What is this? Pop up in Safari with red warning sign saying something about an ip address?
#1
I have no idea what this was about. Out of nowhere, a small window appeared announcing something about an ip address which it showed, but I didn't know what to do with it. It was worrisome because I have no idea what it represented, but the red icon (I think it had an exclamation mark in the middle) seemed to indicate a problem.

Since ip addresses don't mean much to me, except when I was troubleshooting my router or my wireless printer, I don't know what to make out of this or if there's something that I need to do.

I appreciate any advice on this.

Thanks for your thoughts,

GeneL

A screen shot of that window posted on one of the hosting sites would be a big help.

It wasn't a warning about a "website" or "malware?"

Dunno then.

Can you remember anything else about it?

I would guess a javascript window that simply tells you your IP address and then tries to scare you into downloading the trojan laden program to "fix" the problem.

Someone on either this or some other Mac forum used to have a sig that would report your IP address back to you. It was kind of funny because some people thought that their IP address was being posted to the forum for all to see. However, the only person who saw their address was the person looking at that page. All other readers of the forum saw their own IP address.

It is possible that another machine on your network has the same IP address, and when you go to open Safari, your machine "checks in" with the router. When it finds the duplicate, the OS pops up an error window. You are probably just in Safari, and therefore think it's coming from the browser, instead of the operating system.

Have any other machines on your network, or are you all alone?

Yeah, good advice.

GeneL,
Is your internet access working from this computer?

Sorry. no screen shot. It really took me by surprise.

I had just purchased a sdhc card reader ($2.99 including shipping) using paypal and saw that it was marked paypal.hk (Hong Kong?)

After I paid, I had logged out and emptied the cache and quit per standard procedure. When I opened Safari again, I checked the outfit DealExtreme http://www.dealextreme.com/ on http://www.resellerratings.com/. They seemed like a legit seller, but it was just after this transaction that the "warning" popped up.

I wish I had the presence of mind to have used screen capture to preserved the message. It also popped up on my G4 Powerbook's screen which I had left online in Safari from earlier use. Sad

I do have two other computers on my "network." Mavis' intel mini is ethernet hardwired and my PB is connected by Airport (secured with password} through my router.

Also, I use Intego's NetBarrier X5 (client/local server). Shouldn't this protect me from any intrusion???

Btw, I wondered if there's any way to bring the warning boxes again?

Had that thought and tried that, but nothing showed up.

Thanks.
