In the book Alice is a little girl and at the beginning of the story her older sister is reading to her from a book that has neither pictures nor dialog.

Johnny Depp gets some very interesting roles. I especially liked Dead Man and 9th Gate.

According to the "story" page on the website, this is not the original Alice story -- it is a story about Alice returning to Wonderland at age 19 and revisiting the characters from the first story. This might also explain why it appears that the Mad Hatter has been elevated to a much larger part than in the original story.

As well as the apparent lack of a March Hare.

...I'm no fan of Tim Burton and like very little of what he does.

But this looks interesting and Johnny Depp could make Tim look good.

Depp definitely isn't afraid to take chances. I liked him in 21 Jump Street. After that he was pretty much under my radar until Edward Scissorhands. That was a great movie and he was terrific.

The guy brings a unique style to every character he plays where most other actors would make it pedestrian.
