Remember to use your zip code when getting number so it is local, and you can choose a word for your number (or in my case search for the last 4 digits to match a number you already have)

Google Voice: If you have not requested a Google Voice account, you may want to consider doing so (click "get an invite" at the top of that page). With Google Voice, you can pick a single phone number which rings your home, office, and mobile phones simultaneously. Text messages are sent to your phone and email, and voicemails are transcribed then emailed to you.

For people who have a Google Voice account, here are some tips:
If you answer a Google Voice call from your mobile phone, when you come home you can hit the * key and the call will be transferred to your home phone.
You can record and transcribe parts of a call by hitting 4. Say for example someone tells you something you want to save (like a date or a phone number), no more worrying about finding a pen. Tap 4 and it will be transcribed into your inbox.
You can specify some friends and family to connect directly to you, bypassing the call screener. To do so, click "Contacts" on the left menu to add friends and family to the "friends" and "family" group. Then click "Settings" at the upper-right of the page, then "Groups", click the group, click "Call Presentation" and choose "Off".
You can record a voicemail greeting specifically for individual callers or callers within a group, such as "Hi mom, sorry I missed your call."
To do a conference call, have up to 4 people call your Google Voice number. When each person calls, you can press 5 to add each person to the cal
