While driving I radio surfed to a talk show. The caller was a 30ish black man who was describing the despair in certain black communities. According to him, life is cheap there because you are going to die anyway when you get old. It is the quality of life that is important, he said. If you know the past 40 years were crappy, why live another 30 crappy years then die? His point was they engage in dangerous behavior which tends to shorten the lifespans, to die now and avoid the next 30 crappy years, using my example. The host got sarcastic and ended the call instead of trying understanding his point. Agreement wasn’t necesary. I put music back on. But it was an interesting, and useful point for me to hear.

This doesn't sound like your garden variety, knee-jerk racist to me.
An earlier paragraph -- mostly written in street vernacular -- appears to be the work of a racist when taken out of context, but I am not going to judge the man on the basis of that passage alone, or even the rest of his "diary."

(I will, however, judge him on the basis of his actions of shooting up a gym full of people. But I don't particularly have a ton of time to devote to this.)

Wife and I have carry permits, but our gym makes everyone sign a
"no guns in gym form" to protect themselves from people jacking lockers
to swipe guns from LEOs in the gym. I spoke to management there again
today about possibly resciding that requirement in light of this deadly attack by a loon.
For gym wear, try a SmartCarry holster. They can easily conceal my 1911 with a
spare mag. They work well.
Did anyone read this guys web diary. The entry dated 11/5/08 shows that he

I got a visit at my office yesterday from a woman with a similar illness. She says she was gang-raped by the government because she is psychic. The government found out and raped her to keep her quiet. She is psychic because she is Greek. Most Greeks are psychic but she is more psychic than even most Greeks. The government found out about this and they are systematically raping women in Greektown. They can't keep her quiet and she is going to tell all the women.

Anyhow, she sounded very much like Sodini's diary. Her conversation was very disjointed, like his. I do not mean that I expect this woman to come back and shoot up my office. What I mean is, Sodini did not shoot up that aerobics class because he was a right-winger; he shot up the class because he was mentally ill and had a fixation on young women.

People with this illness sound perfectly reasonable, except that their reasoning is perfectly wack. But they don't shout, they don't drool, they don't do any of the things you would see from a mentally ill character on TV or in the movies. They seem normal but they are desperately sick.

I think it's a mistake to characterize this tragedy as political. I do not think it is like the bigot who shot up the Holocaust Museum at all.

As gute pointed out, psychotics may tend to claim affiliation with one political group or another. Which is irrelevant, and neither justifies their actions nor implies that all members of that political group are somehow suffering from the same psychosis.

Unless you're some kind of wing-nut yourself. Then any and all associations you make between unrelated actions are of course justifiable proof of your long held opinions.
