Are Washer/Dryer Pedestals worth it?
#1
We just bought a new washer and dryer (delivery on Sat) and we didnt get the pedestals. Is it worth it, or is it money wasted? Space isnt an issue in the room, so the storage isnt a winning feature for us, but I am concerned about the height. This would be our first front load set. I'm used to bending to get into the regular style dryer, so I cant imagine it being any different with front load washer.

For our aging knees and backs, we would. However, those pedestals wouldn't work for our W/D where we live at the moment as our appliances are already stacked on top each other due to space limitation.

We bought them when we got our front loaders, and IMO they are worth it. Really saves the back.

We have two for our W/D and they're great - really put it at a usable height, and the storage is nice as well.

For the cheapo alternative, you might consider fabricating a pedestal out of plywood and 2x4's and then paint it. Those pedestals are expensive. Just make sure you have enough support under the washer.

How about sitting them on a few cinderblocks?

They were pricey when we bought them; $150 a piece but if you go for it don't improvise. Get what they show in store.

People have different ideas about what constitutes convenient or efficient. While I like the idea of having the openings to the appliances at a more convenient level, I'd never get the pedestals, because I use the top of the washer and dryer for folding clothes. Given how much longer I spend folding laundry than putting it in the washer and/or dryer, I'd much rather have the work space. Where is laundry folded in your house?

We typically fold in the family room on the coffee table or the hassock. Now that the new house has a proper laundry room, I see us folding in there. I was contemplating building a countertop above the W/D so its extra workspace for laundry and other things. Our laundry room is 6x8, and is also our mud room (with mahogany floors!).

I bought a front loader and it was defective. First load of wash the damn thing failed to enter the drain cycle. I was stuck with a washer full of soapy clothes and could not open the door or all the soapy water would drain on to the floor. The repair man disconnected and moved the washer to the yard, laid it on its back and removed the clothes from there. What a pain.

I ended up sending the thing back and getting a trusty top loader.

We have been supremely unhappy with our (first ever) front-load clothes washer. It smells moldy. We leave the door open to vent it. But the thing seals so well when closed, no fresh air gets into the the thing like a top-load.

No peds.
