Yes there is STF. I had a problem and downloaded a fix that allowed me to run both. It worked well until my drive died. It doesn't eliminate Safari 4, it allows you to run both.
I reconstructed from an old drive that didn't have Safari 4 so I no longer need nor can I access that software or I'd give you a better lead. I started using Camino during that time and am getting to like it. I think it was Silencio who turned me onto the Safari fix, but a STF for Safari 4 should get you there.

Why use Safari? iCab, Opera, Firefox, Camino, and many more to choose from.

what is the problem with safari?
I'm still placing bets that the problem can be fixed by trashing the correct pref.

I'm upgrading a friend's Digital Audio G4 from Panther to Tiger, and every time I get to a certain point in the update process (I'm narrowing in on it) weird problems start happening, like apps not launching, Disk Utility not being able to see any drives (keeps looking but can't find anything, even the drive it's booted from with no other drives attached).. I'm trying to eliminate the Safari 4 install as a possible cause.

You really need to start from scratch at this point. Safari 4 is probably not the problem. Even if it is, just click ignore on the Safari 4 update. It isn't mandatory.
What do you mean by update? I would have done a fresh install, updated the system, installed all my apps, and then manually moved over my data. A bad sector on your drive could be causing a problem. If the drive is still in pretty good shape, a fresh installation might fix the problem. Nathan

I suggest that you start a new thread with the subject, "Help! Major Problems Updating to Tiger!"
Then detail the specifications of the Mac and all peripherals, your installation/update process and the symptom(s) in detail. You say that it's a repeatable event, that at a specific point in the install/update process things go wonky, so what step did you take immediately preceding that point? Also, when "Disk Utility not being able to see any drives" occurs, does the Disk Utility display a spinning beach ball cursor or does it otherwise appear to be functioning normally and let you click buttons to make disk images and such?

I'm running Tiger on a dual proc Gigabit ethernet. No problems. Extra RAM, extra drives, extra PCI cards.
Doc is offering good advice. We need to start the troubleshooting from the beginning. Nathan |
