Put rebuilt Starter in car and it works, but whines.
#1
The car is fine, and it starts fine. But I am not use to a whine or high pitch (different noise) coming from the starter at the time of starting. Maybe I should have paid more for the rebuilt starter.

Hopefully wont be a problem.

This is on a 4 cyl Ford Contour. 95

Sounds like an adjustment problem.
Were there shims (to align the gears) present on the old starter? You may need to loosen the bolts on the starter and "play around" with the alignment to get rid of the noise.
Is the starter seated well (not off angle)? This is unlikely since you said it was a whine and not a grinding noise you heard.

Congratulations on tackling this yourself. Next car project will go easier because of it.

You'll get used to it, kinda like the whine from a new girl friend/boy frend!

LOL M>B>.
Usually its not the starter that whines, its the belts.

I have had rebuilt starters make a whining sound if new brushes were put in and not broken in to have the same curvature as the contacts on the armature. It can disappear after a few weeks of starting.

Belts , that is what neighbor across street said. But it didnt have a belt noise prior to this. So cant figure. Neighbor across street is an airplane or jet mechanic. Probably lead. Works over at the Long Beach Airport.

What is really amazing about getting this starter out and in, is that at the beginning I thought it would be impossible. THen I would go a day, and go as far as I could go, and think that I couldnt do the next part. But every time I went back the next day, the next step was accomphlished and a lot easier.

Whining or not, the thing works. I would try and loosen and do something, but there are only three bolts holding the thing on. Not sure which to loosen, etc, and shim ... especially since I didnt see any when I took it off.

Whack it with a hammer again. Smile I'm just kidding. Congratulations on getting the new one installed; it sounds like it was a tight space to work in.

Did you replace the starter bolts with new bolts? I had a car that busted the bolts because they were so old, this was when I was in high school. I used the included shims, but the bolts still busted and I was stuck with a broken bolt in the engine block. Sold the car for what I bought it for and got something else.

Microman, if the car was sitting for a while, the belts and or pullys will whine, inspect your belts, if they are not cracked, spray them with belt dressing.

Probably a bearing inside the starter motor. Bring it back for a new one while it's under warranty.
